This February, NASA launched the Solar Dynamics Observatory into orbit and began to prepare it to collect data about the Sun. Today, it released some of the first footage from the satellite. Here is a video showing the eruption of a solar prominence on March 30, replayed several times and then in the context of the entire Sun:
I recommend watching the 720p version. There are more YouTube clips available off of the SDO mission’s YouTube page, and you can download even more clips in various formats off the SDO First Light page of Goddard’s Science Visualization Studio.
I really look forward to seeing more imagery from SDO and it should yield a raft of interesting science results too.
