So apparently, the corrupt ruling heads of both the states of Zimbabwe and Illinois have publicly announced that they would not be stepping down from power, blamed outside groups for their dire straits. For Blagojevich, they’re other political players in the state and the media, for Mugabe, they’re Britain, other colonial powers, and Zimbabwe’s neighbors.
Both gave the requisite speeches, that the media loved in different ways. For Blagojevich, it was his style and the ability to analyze every detail of the speech and for Mugabe, it was the awesome headline “Mugabe: ‘Zimbabwe is mine'” or some variation thereof to run, which reminds me of Christopher Lee’s Saruman’s line “Rohan is mine” from the Two Towers movie, though I’m sure that there are plenty of other famous literary and movie villains who have uttered similar lines.
And if there was anything the media liked more than a story, I have yet to see it.
