You may have noticed that the first linked article in my last post was an AFP article that was hosted by Google. This is a very recent occurrence where Google has started actually hosting articles from news agencies like AP and AFP on their site.
According to Philipp Lenssen at Google Blogscoped, these articles are not accessible to the search robots of other search engines, but are universally accessible to users. He also speculates that though there are no ads currently displayed on these articles, Google may start to use it’s own Adwords service to generates some revenue.
So far, Google has refrained from directly monetizing Google News, though many since many news agencies do use Adwords on their own articles, they probably did enjoy some increase in revenue as a result of the service, beyond what might be gained by keeping users loyal to the Google brand.
