Tommy Thompson drops out

Following a sixth-place showing at the Iowa straw poll, Tommy Thompson dropped out of the Republican primary race for President.  This isn’t really big or surprising news, though he was a former governor of my home state of Wisconsin, which is why I am mentioning it.  He never really had a viable bid and I wonder if he was really looking to put his name out for a Vice Presidential or Cabinet bid.

The winner of the straw poll was Mitt Romney, the biggest Republican fundraiser and the only one of the media-anointed “top three” to participate.  Mike Huckabee pulled off a second place finish followed by Brownback and Tancredo.  It will be interesting to see if these candidates gain some traction among Republicans in the coming months.
